So in the middle of the night when everyone was asleep I used the key to escape my cage and slipped out the door.
“But,” said Mr Percival, “I need you to touch me Storm Boy. The magic only works if you touch something you love and you were my favourite thing in my first life. So Storm Boy reached out and felt Mr Percival’s feathered wing. Storm Boy and Mr Percival returned to the Coorong where they went fishing everyday.

“I didn’t eat anything for a week so that I grew thinner and thinner. Eventually I could slip through the bars of the cage and in the middle of the night I carried out my plan.”

At night when I got some water to drink I complained to the guard that it was dirty. He said he would have a look. When he bent over to see if the water was clean or impure, a wonderful thing happened. Magically, the key fell out of his pocket and I caught it.

“Well then,” said Mr Percival “I woke up in a dark, cold jail cell. A guard was outside my cage, I shivered in fright. I asked him how I could get out. He said that I needed the key of life which was hanging from his belt, then I could unlock my cage and the door which he had sworn never to do. Suddenly I had an idea.”
